Howdy! how’s your wet summer goin’?

Today, I’ll feature something that will combat the heat (or cold) of summer— MILK TEAS! I think the milk tea fad hit the Philippines about a year ago or two (?). I’ve tried several milk teas but let me first share the one that’s closest to my heart (cheezy, eh?!).

Moonleaf Tea Shop is one of my favorite tea shops. They serve good and affordable teas compared to others; the perfect combination of price and quality. Here are some of our favorites:

Pearl Jasmine Tea

Pearl Jasmine Tea

Description: brewed Jasmine tea base with pearls
Price:  PHP 55
Serving: good for 1 (they serve only 1 size, not sure what’s the volume)

PJT is your basic Jasmine tea with pearls. I think liking brewed tea is an acquired taste since we Filipinos are not very much into brewing leaves. haha! But really, try it! Jasmine tea has this subtle kick that relaxes and soothes your body. Of all the tea shops around, Moonleaf has gotten the sweetness of their teas closest to Filipino preference. I’m not so fond of milk teas ’cause I remembered the period when I used to drink about 5 or more cups a day of Royal Milk Tea in Japan. I gained weight in less than two weeks. It’s winter that time, give me some slack! haha

Pearl Black Tea

Just like PJT, PBT has the same idea just a different tea base. Compared to Jasmine tea, Black tea has a stronger “tea taste” (if you know what I mean).

Peppermint Milk Tea

Peppermint Milk Tea

Peppermint Milk Tea
Description:   peppermint tea base with milk and an option of added pearls
Price:  PHP 75 (+ Php 10 for add ons)
Serving: good for 1 (they serve only 1 size, not sure what’s the volume)

This is a new addition to their menu. Maybe you guys don’t know yet, but I’m a sucker for everything with peppermint– chocolates, ice creams, drinks, anything! I have a lot of friends that doesn’t like the taste of peppermint in their food. They say the taste reminds them of toothpaste so they feel like they shouldn’t eat anymore. :) ) What do you think??? Anyhow, this tea has that fresh minty kick with some sweetness and creaminess of the milk. Its sooo god, I’m craving for one right now. hehe

Wintermelon Milk Tea (left) and Hakka Milk Tea (right)

Wintermelon Milk Tea
Description:    wintermelon tea base with milk and an option of added pearls
Price:  PHP 75 (+ Php 10 for add ons)
Serving: good for 1 (they serve only 1 size, not sure what’s the volume)

Wintermelon tea has a very subdued “tea taste” and little sweetness. It’s good for people who doesn’t like that distinct tea taste. It’s sooo refreshing that you’ll want more. Very in for the summer.

Hakka Milk Tea

Hakka Milk Tea
Description:   black tea base with milk and an option of added pearls
Price:  PHP 75 (+ Php 10 for add ons)
Serving: good for 1 (they serve only 1 size, not sure what’s the volume)

Hakka milk tea is a bit less sweeter than wintermelon milk tea. Hakka tea traces its roots to the second largest ethnic group in Taiwan. They have this flagship beverage called lei cha or Hakka tea. Lei cha literally means “pounded tea”. Originallyit contains peanuts, sesame seeds, and tea; I’m not really sure though if this is the same Hakka tea they are serving.

Sorry, wasn’t able to find the picture in my files.

Lychee JasmineTea
Description:    wintermelon tea base with milk; best with nata add on
Price:  PHP 50 (+ Php 10 for add ons)
Serving: good for 1 (they serve only 1 size, not sure what’s the volume)

Now this one, in one word— REFRESHING. What can I say? Jasmine gives a soothing, relaxing feel while lychee gives that tangy refreshing flavor. It’s best paired with nata add ons.

Moonleaf Tea Shop indeed gives a different kind of brew! Eatingness!
